    The article will discuss one of the English language teaching methodology, translation, the arguments on its effects on foreign language learning, the pros and cons of using translation especially on the Japanese students. The new term of "Translanguaging" will be introduced with its definition and practice. The background of the English language education and the current situation in Japan will also be briefly discussed, followed by the research question, methodology, and tasks conducted in this study. The discussion will be concluded with the discussions and further study plan.

    In the era of globalization, graduates strive to equip with not only hard skills in their professional field, but also the soft skills, one of which is the ability to communicate in different languages. Universities play a significant role in producing graduates that meet the job market requirements, which ultimately enables them to compete globally. Nowadays, technical subjects, also known as workforce-related subjects are taught in English to the undergraduates. By offering the technical subjects in English, it is intended to create more opportunities for English usage among the undergraduates. Task-based Learning is a method that provides students with the natural context to communicate in the target language. As the students work to solve the task, they gain opportunities to talk, and such interaction is part of the language acquisition where students put an effort in understanding the group and expressing their ideas.

    This case study aimed to explore the challenges faced by Japanese office workers (non-academic staff members at a university in Japan), where intercultural communication is required at work, and their unique coping strategies. Unstructured interviews were conducted with follow-up interviews to collect the necessary data from six non-academic staff members of X University. Participants shared some challenging intercultural scenarios they had experienced at workplace and their respective coping strategies. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis and resulting in seven categories of intercultural communication challenges: 1) language barriers; 2) assumption of similarities; 3) expecting no similarities; 4) non-verbal communication barriers; 5) social pressure; 6) prejudice; 7) taboos, and five categories of coping strategies: 1) to be more direct when communicating; 2) to adopt apologizing strategy; 3) to use simpler words; 4) to reduce speed while speaking; 5) to learn the target culture. The findings on the intercultural communication challenges fit into the six barriers of intercultural communication proposed by Barna (1997). Implications and suggestions were offered for future research.

    This study examines various workplace scenarios of Japanese apologies to find out why someone apologizes, why they choose certain form of apology and its impacts in the workplace. Participants of the study were recruited online on a voluntary basis to participate in semi-structured phone interviews. Participants recalled and shared occurrences when they had to apologize in the workplace and the effectiveness of the apologies. Then, revision was made to this methodology to also have the participants to comment and react to a few situations created by the researcher to collect more useful data. All the phone interviews were recorded and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results revealed that apology in the workplace and the forms of apology were influenced by a wide range of social, linguistics and cultural factors. The effectiveness of apologies also moderated by the perceived sincerity, interpersonal relationship of the parties involved, severity of the offense, power distance and the existence of preceding offense.

    As the Japanese workforce continue to shrink, the inflow of immigrant workers leads to rapid internationalization of workplace. As a result, staff members need to understand intercultural communication to a greater extend to improve their communication skills at workplace for smoother operation.
    In the 77th JBCA National Convention, a case study entitled “Intercultural communication in a multicultural workplace: Challenges and strategies of effective intracultural communication” was presented. This case study focused only on the Japanese staff as the subject of the study. To provide a complete and all-rounded insights of this issue, the researchers think that the voice of the foreign staff, which is also an important part of the multicultural workplace should be heard. It was with such a belief in mind that this research study was conducted.
    Different from the previous study, the researches aimed to compare the challenges faced by the Japanese staff and the foreign staff of X University1 in intercultural communication at work, and the strategies they used to improve intercultural communication skills in the workplace to identify both similarities and differences. Several unstructured interviews were conducted with follow up interviews whenever necessary to collect the necessary data. Then, the transcripts of the interview were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Subsequently, a comparative qualitative analysis was conducted to identify similarities and differences between the two set of data to draw conclusion.

    This presentation deals with a case study from a perspective of an intercultural/ intracultural communication in a multicultural workplace subtitled “Challenges and strategies of effective intracultural communication”. Here, we define “intracultural communication” as a type of communication where the degree of familiarity between the communicators is very high, or communicators already knew each other very well. .
    Owing to the advancement of technology and the rapid globalization of organizations, being in contact with many culturally diverse people at workplace has become an inescapable part of life of the heterogeneous society especially in Japan. To ensure a smooth operation within an organization, staff members are required to develop knowledge and skills necessary for effective intercultural communication in the multicultural workplace.
    This case study aimed to explore the challenges faced by the Japanese staff members of X University in intercultural communication at work and the strategies employed by the Japanese staff members overcome the challenges and to improve intercultural communication skills in the workplace. Several unstructured interviews were conducted to collect the necessary data from staff members of X University. Then, conclusion was drawn by stressing on the importance of several communication strategies and attitudes necessary to ensure effective intercultural communication at a multiracial workplace.

    Mobile assisted language learning (MALL) has caught the attention of educators and researchers in the recent years. However, there isn’t sufficient empirical studies to prove its effectiveness in promoting English language. This case study which was carried out with 10 Japanese university students, aimed to investigate if HelloTalk, a language exchange learning application, can promote self-regulated learning among the participants. Participants are encouraged to freely use all the features of the mobile application, which include text messages, voice messages, voice-to-text, text-to-voice, translation, free calls, favorites language information (database of foreign language words, sentences, audio files, grammar corrections, or pictures), and grammar corrections, moments and comments, to assist their English learning outside of the classroom. Data is collected from participants’ public posts in the application and interviews. The results suggested that HelloTalk provided a platform for participants to use English more frequently. The opportunity to interact with native speakers in English and the immediate assistance they received from other application users during their learning of English motivated participants and promoted self-regulated learning. However, result also suggested that language teachers should be aware of the social networking features of the application which might be misused for non-language learning purposes.
