Forging a Symbiosis Framework: An Interdisciplinary Blueprint for Scaling Nature-Based Solutions Reviewed

Despite unprecedented political endorsement, nature-based solutions (NbS) consistently fail to achieve the systemic transformation required for climate and biodiversity crises. This implementation deadlock stems from a profound triple strategic gap: a translational evidence gap between fragmented science and actionable design, a strategic design gap in misaligned institutions, and a fundamental theoretical integration gap disconnecting ecological principles from socio-economic solutions. This study forges and validates the symbiosis framework—an interdisciplinary blueprint designed to bridge this triple gap. Employing design science research, we: (1) synthesize ecological theory with institutional economics to distill three core design principles—functional reciprocity, nested modular network architecture, and strategic leverage and foundational support; (2) translate these into a conceptual model and strategic implementation blueprint; and (3) validate the framework through comparative analysis of global NbS case studies. The resulting framework provides a novel translational logic, moving beyond critique to offer a prescriptive design tool. It enables practitioners to diagnose systemic failures and design interventions that emulate ecological intelligence while applying institutional design principles: cultivating reciprocal partnerships, structuring resilient networks through polycentric governance, and strategically targeting catalytic leverage points and foundational assets. We conclude that scaling NbS requires a paradigm shift from managing isolated symptoms to architecting symbiotic systems. The symbiosis framework provides the essential interdisciplinary blueprint for this shift.

For biodiversity conservation, utilization of biodiversity is expanding rather than strengthening regulation. This reflects the statement of Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is becoming more influential, so it is significant to consider the framework of use of biodiversity. On the other hand, a recent key concept for biodiversity conservation is Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). This study analyzed use and regulation of biodiversity in a various aspects of biodiversity conservation such as forest, coral reef, poaching, PES and economic incentives, mentioning to ecosystem services, in terms of theoretical and empirical approaches.

In this three-year long research project, we conducted both theoretical and empirical research on introduction of virtue ethics (ethics theory which emphasizes contributions to the community through acquisition of moral virtues) into economics in order to evaluate policies and its related research. The research results were published in international academic journals such as Japanese Economic Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, International Review of Economics and Finance, and domestic academic journals such as Kansei Engineering and Review of Environmental Economics and Policy Studies, and also ware presented at international conferences.

Loss of biodiersity is rapid and there exists a great concern over the future level. Biodiversity policy can be addressed from many angles. Thus, we need to consider the conservation system in local and international level. This research studied: (1) conservation in local level as in Toyooka, Japan (2) conservation along international treaties such as CBD and CITES (3) economic and conservation effects of REDD. In particular, I demonstrated how benefit sharing arising from genetic resources should be between a developing country and a pharmaceutical conmapy in a developed country.

In this study,15 domains which were subdivided from society, economy, and environment of sustainable development were put forward, and indicators of each domain were derived by applying three norms for sustainability:care for others, preparation for various risks, and vitality of stakeholders.
A WEB monitor survey using these indicators was conducted, the number of indicators for each do-mains were reduced to three on the basis of the degree of inner consistency, and 45 indicators were ex-tracted in total.
The trial of this indicators was conducted. The trial communities were 2 distircts at mountain areas in the city of Hamamatsu and 4 districts of Kamigo in the town of Asahi,Yamagata. The effectiveness of the check list was examined by the traial of assessment and workshop about the future of the community.
